Congress Successfully Avoids Government Shutdown with Bipartisan Agreement

Congress averted a government shutdown with just hours to spare after weeks of unproductive negotiations and divisions within the Republican-controlled House. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy made a surprise announcement to put a short-term, stopgap measure up for a vote, which was approved on a bipartisan basis. The measure keeps the government funded at current levels through Nov. 17 and includes additional disaster relief funding but omits aid for Ukraine. The Senate also passed the measure, effectively avoiding a shutdown and extending government funding.
