DeSantis Defies Supreme Court, Expands Death Penalty for Child Rapists in Florida

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that makes child rapists eligible for the death penalty in the state, going against a 2008 U.S. Supreme Court decision. The bill also includes a minimum sentence of life in prison without parole for child rapists. DeSantis's office said he's prepared to take this law all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to overrule judicial precedents. The governor also approved other "law and order" measures, including making it a first-degree felony to possess, sell or manufacture the drug fentanyl and other controlled substances "that resemble candy."
