George Santos in Plea Negotiations with Federal Prosecutors

Disgraced former Republican Congressman George Santos is in discussions with U.S. prosecutors for a possible plea deal over corruption charges. Santos was expelled from Congress earlier this month due to allegations of defrauding campaign contributors and misusing campaign funds. The U.S. Attorney's office for the Eastern District of New York confirmed that plea negotiations are underway. Santos has not been convicted but faces 23 counts related to wire fraud, identity theft, and other charges. A trial date has been set for September 2024, but prosecutors have requested a trial date in May or June of the same year. A special election to fill Santos' seat in New York has been scheduled for February 2024.
