"House GOP prioritizes debt ceiling and student loan forgiveness ban in upcoming talks"

The Main Street Caucus, a House GOP caucus of over 60 members, released a list of priorities for Speaker Kevin McCarthy to pursue as part of a measure to raise the debt ceiling. The priorities include clawing back unspent coronavirus funds, ending the pause on federal student loan repayment, limiting non-defense discretionary spending growth to 1.5% annually, and increasing work requirements for the food stamps program. The caucus also called for a bipartisan panel to propose solutions for increasing the sustainability of Medicare and Social Security. McCarthy has signaled that the House GOP conference will move on its own with a debt ceiling bill if Democrats don’t come to the bargaining table.
