Iowa Legislature Passes Controversial Abortion Ban, Sparks Debate

The Iowa Legislature has passed a bill that would restrict abortion, sending it to Governor Kim Reynolds for approval. The legislation would limit abortion once cardiac activity can be detected, typically around six weeks of pregnancy. Exceptions are included for medical emergencies, rape, and incest, with reporting requirements. If signed into law, Iowa would join several other states that have passed similar "heartbeat bills." The ACLU of Iowa, Planned Parenthood, and the Emma Goldman Clinic have vowed to challenge the law in court. The previous abortion ban in Iowa was struck down in 2019. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, at least 15 states have severely limited abortion services.
