Jan. 6 Defendant Sentenced to Over 4 Years for Stealing and Assaulting Police Officer

Thomas Sibick, a defendant involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol siege, has been sentenced to 50 months in prison for forcibly removing the badge and radio of a beaten police officer. The judge emphasized the significance of the badge as a symbol of the officer's service and criticized Sibick's lack of remorse. The officer, Michael Fanone, spoke at the sentencing hearing, calling Sibick a coward and a liar. Sibick had asked for leniency, claiming he was trying to help Fanone, but the judge dismissed this claim and highlighted Sibick's active participation in the mob. Sibick pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer and will also have to pay $2,000 for damage to the Capitol complex.
