Johnson pushes Trump-backed election reforms through House using reconciliation

Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republicans advanced the SAVE America Act by using budget reconciliation to push election-integrity measures (including federal voter ID and citizenship proof) past Democratic opposition. The framework passed 216-214 with near-total GOP support and three GOP defections (Massie, Davidson, Kiley); Democrats opposed. The plan would channel roughly $95 billion in new spending, including about $10 billion for states to implement election reforms, amid fiscal hawks’ concerns over offsets. With a razor-thin majority, Johnson can afford few defections as he presses Trump’s top election priority through the chamber, with the Senate and a final bill still to go.
