Meet Tanya Chutkan: The Judge Presiding Over Trump's Jan. 6 Case in D.C.

U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan, a tough critic of former President Donald Trump, has been randomly assigned to oversee his federal criminal indictment related to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Chutkan previously rejected Trump's attempts to use executive privilege to withhold White House communications from investigators. She ruled that Congress had a strong public interest in obtaining these records. Chutkan has been the toughest sentencing judge for Jan. 6 defendants, sentencing all 31 defendants who appeared before her to jail or prison time. Trump is scheduled to appear before a magistrate judge on Thursday.
