Miami City Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla has been arrested on charges including money laundering, bribery, unlawful compensation, and criminal conspiracy. He turned himself in to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and is facing multiple counts of official misconduct and failure to report gifts. Diaz de la Portilla and his attorney, William W. Riley Jr., allegedly accepted payments for his brother's judicial campaign without reporting them and laundered concealed political contributions in exchange for permission to build a sports complex. If convicted, they could face decades in prison. Diaz de la Portilla denies any wrongdoing, claiming the charges are politically motivated.
