Michigan Senate Passes Sweeping Gun Control Measures

The Michigan Senate has passed a package of 11 gun control bills, including measures to expand background checks, mandate storage standards for firearms in homes where children are present, and permit "extreme risk" protection orders to allow guns to be taken away from people deemed a risk to themselves and others. The bills passed along party lines, with Democrats in support and Republicans in opposition. GOP lawmakers contended the measures wouldn't prevent shootings but would infringe on constitutional rights, while Democrats said the bills were the first steps needed to combat gun violence following the Feb. 13 shooting at Michigan State University that left three students dead and five injured.
