Mississippi's Legal Battles Over Control and Justice

Mississippi has passed two new laws expanding law enforcement reach over the entire city of Jackson and implementing major changes to its judicial system. While some see it as a necessary public safety move for a city that has seen a sharp rise in homicides, others view it as a regression toward the state’s painful Civil Rights era past. The laws have left Jackson divided, with Democratic elected officials calling them a “slap in the face of our city.” The NAACP has filed a federal lawsuit to challenge the law, which is set to go into effect on July 1.
