California Governor Gavin Newsom is sending the state's National Guard and Highway Patrol to assist San Francisco in combating the trafficking of fentanyl. The multiagency operation will focus on holding drug suppliers and traffickers accountable, without criminalizing those struggling with substance use. Fentanyl trafficking and opioid-related deaths have been a growing concern in the US, with San Francisco seeing a more than 40% jump in overdose deaths from January through March of this year alone.
