NYC Extends Pied-à-Terre Tax Exemption Deadline After Mistaken Notices

New York City’s Department of Finance extended the pied-à-terre exemption deadline to October 6 after court filings showed the city had mistakenly sent notices to about 1,210 addresses that are primary residences; the rollout has faced multiple deadline changes and missteps. About 11,000 people started exemption applications and 2,900 exemptions were granted, while more than 5,500 appeals had been filed. The DOF also plans to send another 10,800 letters by August 31 based on new 2025 tax data, with 6,400 of those targeting entity/trust-owned properties and 4,400 for addresses the city could not determine as primary homes.
