The Seattle City Council rejected a bill that would have allowed the City Attorney to prosecute drug possession and public use, leaving the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office with sole authority. The Downtown Seattle Association expressed disappointment, citing the worsening drug crisis and its impact on public health and safety. The legislation aimed to make the knowing possession and public use of illegal drugs a gross misdemeanor, but failed to pass. Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell stated that regardless of the vote, the focus will remain on arresting drug dealers and advancing new approaches to treatment.
