Sen. Ben Cardin to Retire, Sparking Democratic Primary Race

Democratic Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland announced that he will not seek re-election in 2024, setting up a potential primary battle in the deep-blue state. Cardin, who has served Maryland for over 50 years in public office, is the third Democratic senator to pass on running for re-election in 2024. Potential candidates for the vacated seat include Rep. Jamie Raskin, Rep. David Trone, Prince George’s County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks, and Montgomery County Council at-large member Will Jawando. On the Republican side, former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan may seek higher office after turning down the chance to challenge Sen. Chris Van Hollen last cycle.
