Texas AG Ken Paxton's Bid to Dismiss Charges Ahead of September Trial

Lawyers for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who was impeached, have filed motions seeking to dismiss most of the charges against him before his September trial. They argue that the charges rely on alleged acts of corruption that occurred before his most recent election in 2022. Paxton's attorneys claim that state law prohibits the removal of an official for conduct that took place before their latest election. Only one of the 20 impeachment charges would not be subject to dismissal. The presiding officer over Paxton's impeachment trial will be Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and the Republican-controlled Senate will decide whether to convict or acquit Paxton.
