She argued that America needs stronger data and privacy protection laws rather than a TikTok ban. Ocasio-Cortez also pointed out that major social media companies like Meta also collect "troves of deeply personal data" and that the US doesn't have "significant data or privacy protection laws." She called for protecting Americans from "egregious data harvesting" by companies without their consent.
