Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed gun control bills that expand background check requirements for firearm purchases and institute storage standards for guns kept in homes where children are present. The new laws, which take effect next year, are the most significant firearm restrictions Michigan has enacted in decades. Republican lawmakers have contended the bills won't prevent future shootings but will infringe on constitutional rights. The bills were passed in response to a mass shooting on the campus of Michigan State University that left three students dead and five injured.
