Wisconsin Legislature Passes Shared Revenue Bill to Aid Local Governments and Avert Milwaukee Financial Crisis.

Wisconsin lawmakers passed a bill that increases funding for local governments across the state by increasing the amount of revenue that returns to those governments from the state, known as shared revenue. The bill also allows the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County to each implement a new or additional sales tax through two-thirds votes of the Common Council and County Board of Supervisors as opposed to letting voters decide. A separate bill that Republicans required the Democratic governor to sign in exchange for their support to save Milwaukee from falling off a fiscal cliff, which boosts funding for private school vouchers, drew ire from Wisconsin's teachers' unions.
