Officials are warning about the proper use and maintenance of lithium-ion batteries to prevent fires, as an increase in such fires has been observed nationally. Improper charging and storage of e-bikes, scooters, and other gadgets that use these batteries can cause them to overcharge, overheat, and combust, creating an explosive fire. The Baltimore County Fire Department has fought three fires in June caused by lithium-ion batteries. Firefighters advise plugging the devices directly into the wall, using the right cords, and not leaving them unattended while charging. They also recommend discontinuing the use of damaged batteries and seeking help from the manufacturer or fire department.
