Americans celebrated Juneteenth with parties, parades, and gatherings to commemorate the end of slavery after the Civil War. While some urged quiet reflection on America's violent and oppressive treatment of Black citizens, others celebrated the new federal holiday. However, some states have banned the teaching of Juneteenth's history and significance. A recent poll shows that 70% of Black adults believe that "a lot" needs to be done to achieve equal treatment for African Americans in policing. The holiday observance continues Monday with Vice President Kamala Harris appearing on a CNN special with musical guests, and schools and federal buildings will be closed.
