Congress Struggles to Keep Up with AI Regulation

Lawmakers in the US are discussing various options for regulating artificial intelligence (AI), including rules to ensure it is not used to discriminate or violate civil rights, and whether to regulate the developer of AI or the company that uses it. Some in the business community favour a risk-based approach that only regulates critical areas like medical diagnoses. OpenAI has discussed a standalone AI regulator, while some legislators advocate a "values-based approach" to prioritise privacy, civil liberties and rights. However, consensus is far from certain, and some Republicans may oppose any AI regulation.
