Montana Makes History with First Statewide TikTok Ban

Montana's House of Representatives has passed a bill that would ban TikTok in the state, citing concerns over the Chinese government's potential to hoard US user data. If signed into law by the governor, Montana would become the first state to ban TikTok downloads. Violators would face a fine of $10,000 a day, and the law would start in January 2024, allowing TikTok to launch a federal court appeal. The Biden administration is negotiating with the company about divesting from its Beijing corporate parent, and Congress is working on a bill to ban apps controlled by "foreign adversaries."
