The New York Police Department (NYPD) is testing a 400-pound robot called K5 in the Times Square subway station. Developed by Knightscope, the fully autonomous security robot is equipped with four cameras and will record video but not audio. It will not use facial recognition technology and will cost an average of $9 per hour to lease. The robot will initially spend two weeks mapping the station and will eventually patrol the mezzanine level, serving as a mobile camera for straphangers to call for help. While some see it as a valuable tool for law enforcement, privacy advocates express concerns about surveillance and potential violations of civil rights.
