Twitter Withdraws from EU Disinformation Code, Musk to Follow Suit

Twitter has withdrawn from the EU's voluntary code of practice on disinformation, which could signal Elon Musk's intention to cease operations in Europe entirely. The Digital Services Act (DSA) will become law in August, making the voluntary agreement mandatory for large social media sites. The DSA requires large digital platforms to monitor and demonetize disinformation and bot farms on their sites, offer transparent warnings about political advertising, and empower fact-checking. Musk's recent posts on Twitter have included several references to alt-right themes and fascism, which could run afoul of the EU's framework for combating racism and xenophobia, landing Twitter and Musk in hot water with the European Commission.
