The Biden administration has approved New York's congestion pricing plan, allowing the city to charge drivers entering central Manhattan at peak times to reduce gridlock. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will need almost a year to set up the new tolling infrastructure once it obtains federal approval, putting it on track to launch congestion pricing in the second quarter of 2024. The state approved congestion pricing in 2019 to raise $1 billion annually for the MTA's capital plan. The new tolling system has drawn opposition from a bipartisan coalition of suburban lawmakers in New York and New Jersey and is expected to face legal challenges.
