The Texas Department of Public Safety is warning people against traveling to Mexico due to heightened awareness about abductions and cartel violence. The warning comes after the deaths of two Americans near Matamoros earlier this month and the disappearance of three Texas women who crossed into Mexico to go to a flea market. Mexico's president has disputed the claim that his country is dangerous, saying that it is safer than the U.S. However, Tamaulipas, the Mexican state where the group of four Americans traveled, is one of six states under the "Do Not Travel To" advisory due to crime and kidnapping.
