Rhode Island Sailboat Heist Ends in Deadly Police Shootout

A Rhode Island man, Brendan Norris, 27, allegedly stole a rare 1968 Hinkley Bermuda 40 sailboat named Pathfinder from Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City, sailed it to Newport, Rhode Island, and was confronted aboard the vessel by Newport Police around 9 a.m. Norris fired on officers, killing one and injuring another who was later hospitalized in stable condition. The owner of Pathfinder reported the boat missing, and officials say the boat—one of roughly 200 of its model left—was recovered in Newport after Norris’s gunfight with authorities.
