University of Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band member dies after heat-related collapse

Derek Phillips, a University of Iowa Tippie College of Business student and mellophone section leader in the Hawkeye Marching Band, died after collapsing from heat stroke and suffering cardiac arrest during Saturday’s home game against Northern Illinois; his family said life support was removed due to severe brain injury, and the university and band announced plans to honor him while offering counseling and reinforcing safety measures as heat advisories and cooling resources were deployed at the event.
