Smith’s ninth-inning walk-off sinks Yankees, AL East hopes fade

Diamondbacks outfielder Pavin Smith hit a two-run walk-off homer off Michael Fulmer in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Yankees 5-3 in Phoenix, further shrinking New York’s lead in the AL East to five games with eight games remaining. Cam Schlittler worked six innings, but a late Arizona rally after the Yankees threatened in the fifth helped set up the decisive ninth, as New York’s push toward the division remains unlikely but not yet over.
