Instagram Introduces Permission-Based DMs for Enhanced User Protection

Instagram is implementing new measures to prevent spam and unwanted DM requests. Users who are not followed by you can now only send a one-message invite before they can start chatting, and that message can only contain text. Unsolicited photos, videos, and voice messages will no longer appear in message requests. Users can only send multiple messages once their request to connect has been accepted. These changes are part of Meta's broader safety push, which includes introducing new messaging safeguards and enhanced parental controls on Instagram and Messenger.
