The suspect charged in the death of nursing student Laken Hope Riley at the University of Georgia has been arrested multiple times since illegally entering the U.S. in 2022. Jose Antonio Ibarra, along with his brother Diego Jose Ibarra, had been apprehended by U.S. border patrol agents and released pending adjudication of their asylum claims. Jose Ibarra was arrested on murder charges after a bench warrant was issued for his arrest stemming from an earlier incident. Diego Ibarra was also charged with possessing a fraudulent U.S. permanent resident card. The brothers, from Venezuela, have had multiple run-ins with the law, including shoplifting and driving under the influence.
