George Santos Engaged in Plea Negotiations with Federal Prosecutors

Former New York Rep. George Santos is in talks with federal prosecutors for a possible plea deal to avoid a trial scheduled for September. Prosecutors are requesting an additional status conference in 30 days to allow more time for negotiations. Santos, who pleaded not guilty to charges including wire fraud and money laundering, may have the trial date moved to May or June. Santos was recently expelled from Congress after a House Ethics Committee report found he had fraudulently exploited his candidacy for personal financial gain. The committee also referred additional allegations of unlawful conduct to the Justice Department for investigation.
