Imposter sentenced to 6 years for faking as Marine veteran.

Sarah Jane Cavanaugh, a former social worker at a Rhode Island veterans’ hospital, has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for using stolen patient information to fraudulently collect nearly $300,000 in benefits, charitable contributions, and donations by pretending to be a decorated Marine Corps veteran with cancer. She attended public events in uniform, bought a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star to wear, and was even named commander of a Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Cavanaugh pleaded guilty to wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, forgery, and fraudulent use of medals. She has been ordered to pay full restitution.
