The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating the death of Stephen Smith as a homicide, according to an attorney for Smith's mother. Smith's death was originally ruled a hit-and-run, but his mother and others have been skeptical of that conclusion. Smith's car broke down near the Murdaugh family's hunting estate, and he was a classmate of Buster Murdaugh. SLED chief Mark Keel reportedly told the attorney that Smith's death was not caused by a vehicular accident but was instead intentional homicide. Smith's mother has raised enough money to exhume her son's body.
