Uncovering the Gilgo Beach Killer: Evidence, Journalism, and Emotional Toll

Police investigators searched the Long Island backyard of accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann, tearing up a wooden deck, removing cement tiles, and emptying a storage shed. They carried out evidence bags and various gardening tools, including hedge clippers. The investigation is related to the discovery of 10 sets of human remains, including eight women and an unidentified man and toddler, found on the beach between 2010 and 2011. Heuermann has been charged with killing three of the victims and is considered the prime suspect in another case.
