Unraveling the Gilgo Beach Serial Killer's Dark Secrets
True crime writer Robert Banfelder claims that the Suffolk County District Attorney and law enforcement officials mishandled the investigation into the Gilgo Beach serial killer case, which remained unsolved for 13 years. Banfelder alleges that the officials thwarted efforts to help the investigation, including those of the FBI, and blames a "culture of corruption" involving former police chief James Burke, former District Attorney Thomas Spota, and former Anti-Corruption Bureau Chief Christopher McPartland. Last week, Rex Heuermann was charged with three counts each of first and second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of three women whose remains were found near Gilgo State Park in 2010. Banfelder believes Heuermann is also the primary suspect in the death of another woman who went missing in 2007.
