Contaminated Eye Drops Linked to 4 Deaths and Dozens of Infections, CDC Reports

Four people have died and 81 patients in 18 states have been treated for an extensively drug-resistant strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa linked to recalled eye drops, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC and FDA warned patients and clinicians to stop using EzriCare or Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears products in February after one death from an infection and reactions in dozens of patients. The products were recalled over potential bacterial contamination, linked to the multistate outbreak. An FDA inspection found Global Pharma's production process to be unsterile.
