COVID-19 Cases Surge Nationwide, Including New York's Concern Over Highly Divergent Variant

The department is particularly concerned about the situation in Maui County, where there is an average of 14 new cases daily. The presence of fire evacuees and aid workers in close quarters is expected to disrupt usual hygiene practices, potentially leading to further spread. Health officials are also monitoring a highly transmissible variant, BA.2.86, nicknamed "Pirola," which has not yet been reported in Hawaii but has been detected on the East Coast. Additionally, COVID-19 infections have led to the cancellation of visits at Halawa Correctional Facility, where there are currently 45 active cases among approximately 900 inmates.
