COVID-19 Vaccines: Updated and Sooner Than Expected

Updated COVID-19 vaccines, designed to target current variants, are expected to be available in mid-September at drugstores and clinics in the United States. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is anticipated to grant approval in a few weeks, followed by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) evaluating the safety and effectiveness of the new shots. Once the CDC director approves the recommendations, the vaccines can be administered. The vaccines have been modified to combat the XBB.1.5 coronavirus subvariant and are expected to remain effective against closely related strains. Insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act will cover the full cost of vaccines, and a government bridge program will provide free vaccines for those without insurance. COVID-19 tests will continue to be distributed through various channels.
