Gender Gap: U.S. Women Outlive Men by 6 Years

New research published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine reveals that women in the U.S. continue to outlive men by an average of six years, with the largest lifespan difference between the sexes since 1996. Factors contributing to this gap include lower cardiovascular disease and lung cancer death rates among women, linked to differences in smoking behaviors. COVID-19 also played a significant role, with men being more likely to die from the virus. Other potential factors include differences in immune response and lung receptor concentration. Drug overdoses and suicide rates were found to be higher among men. To address these disparities, experts recommend interventions such as education, community-based drug treatment programs, and investments in public health.
