Governor Hochul Takes Action as New COVID Variant Surfaces in New York

Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has announced new measures to protect against COVID-19 following reports of a new variant, BA.2.86, as hospitalizations in the state have increased during the summer. An updated COVID-19 vaccine targeting specific variants is expected to be available in the fall. The state is monitoring and analyzing samples of the virus to understand variant spread, and efforts have been enhanced to detect the new BA.2.86 variant. Schools are advised to review CDC guidance for COVID-19 prevention, and individuals are encouraged to get tested and follow CDC guidelines if they have symptoms. At-home tests, N-95 masks, and test kits are available, and nursing homes have been alerted about the increase in infections. Vaccination sites are also available for those who have not yet been vaccinated or need booster doses.
