Heat and Pollution: A Deadly Combination Doubles Risk of Heart Attack

Exposure to extreme heat and high levels of particle pollution can double the risk of a deadly heart attack, according to a study published in the journal Circulation. The research, which analyzed over 202,000 heart attack deaths in China, found that extreme cold also increased the risk. The study highlighted the harmful effects of PM2.5, the tiniest particulate matter, which can cause respiratory problems and long-term health issues. Older people and women were found to be most vulnerable. As extreme temperatures become more frequent due to climate change, individuals are advised to take precautions such as staying indoors on hot, high pollution days, using air purifiers, and wearing appropriate clothing.
