Mosquito-borne virus strikes Metro Detroit residents

Two residents in Metro Detroit, one from Macomb County and one from Oakland County, have tested positive for Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV), a mosquito-borne illness. Most people infected with JCV show no symptoms, but some may experience high fever, confusion, muscle weakness, headache, and fatigue. In rare cases, JCV can lead to severe brain and spinal cord diseases. Michigan has seen an increase in JCV-positive mosquito pools this summer, along with the presence of West Nile Virus. Health officials advise using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water to prevent mosquito bites.
