US Approves HIV-Positive Organ Transplants for Kidneys and Livers

A new US rule allows HIV-positive individuals to receive kidney and liver transplants from HIV-positive donors, expanding the organ donor pool and potentially reducing wait times for all patients. Previously, such transplants were limited to research studies. The decision is backed by research showing similar survival and rejection rates for recipients of HIV-positive and HIV-negative donor organs. This change follows earlier evidence from South Africa and builds on US research since 2013.
