International Community Urged to Intervene in Haiti to Restore Order and Stem Violence

The U.S.'s top diplomat, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, has called for the urgent deployment of international troops to stabilize Haiti's worsening humanitarian and security crisis. Armed gangs have taken control of large parts of the country following the assassination of its president in 2021, leading to a power void and a lack of access to basic necessities. The United Nations and Haiti's government have also called for international intervention. While Blinken expressed the U.S.'s commitment to helping Haiti restore democratic order through free and fair elections, he did not suggest that U.S.-led forces would be deployed. No other countries have stepped forward to lead a security mission in Haiti.
