Government Settlement Ends Family Separations at U.S. Border for 8 Years

The U.S. government has reached a settlement in a class action lawsuit filed in 2018 seeking injunctive relief for the separation of parents and children at the southwest border. The proposed settlement establishes new standards to limit future family separations and provides for family reunifications, immigration relief, and support services for separated families. The settlement does not involve monetary damages. The Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Health and Human Services have been working to identify class members and reunify families. The settlement agreement is subject to final approval by the district court.
