FBI Director Christopher Wray warned that Chinese hackers are targeting American critical infrastructure, including water treatment plants and the power grid, to potentially "wreak havoc" in the U.S. He emphasized the need for public attention on the threat posed by China's efforts to national security, stating that the cyber onslaught goes beyond prepositioning for future conflict and includes active attacks on economic security and wholesale theft of innovation and data. The FBI has spearheaded efforts to counter China's state and corporate espionage, opening a new China-related counterintelligence case every 10 hours. The Justice Department recently disrupted a Chinese state-sponsored hacking campaign that targeted American critical infrastructure, removing malware from infected routers and taking steps to prevent re-infection.
