A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan, causing buildings to shake violently and leaving at least seven people dead and 711 injured. Dozens are feared trapped under rubble in Hualien county, with more than 120 people known to be trapped, including two German citizens in a tunnel. Tsunami alerts issued for nearby Japanese islands and the northern coast of the Philippines have been downgraded, and both Japan and China have offered assistance to Taiwan.
