Conflicting death tolls have emerged following the devastating floods in Libya, with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) initially reporting 11,300 dead and 10,100 missing, but later citing World Health Organization figures of 3,958 dead and over 9,000 missing. The Libyan Red Crescent rejected OCHA's figures, emphasizing that official numbers should come from the agency authorized by the Libyan authorities. The floods, caused by neglected dams breaking during Storm Daniel, have resulted in widespread destruction and displacement, with an estimated 46,000 people displaced. In addition, five Greek aid workers were killed in a road accident in Libya. Experts had long warned about the poor maintenance of the dams, which suffered major damage in the past, and calls for maintenance went unheeded despite funds being allocated for that purpose.
